Written By Claire C

In this video, Tom Bilyeu compiles important moments from his interviews with 6 fasting experts.  Throughout these discussions, the experts cover everything from the benefits of fasting to the safety considerations fasters should make.

Video compilation of interviews from a number of fasting and health experts including:

            – Mike Mutzel

            – Dr. Goldhammer

            – Dr. Peter Attia

            – Drew Manning

            – Dr. Jason Fung

           – Dr. Will Cole

Fasting Benefits:

  • Reduced levels of mTOR
    • Chronic overexpression of mTOR is linked to premature aging and disease
    • mTOR is the key metabolic switch for autophagy, the process responsible for breaking down old and dysfunctional cell components
  • Longevity effects
  • Cell regeneration
  • Better digestion
  • Anti-cancer effects

Fasting Methodology:

  • Intermittent fasting
    • Recommended that virtually everyone fasts between 12-16 hours each day with an 8-hour feeding window
    • Cumulatively thought to induce changes and promote healing
    • Includes various methods such as alternate-day fasting, 5:2, and 16:8
  • Long-term fasting
    • Recommended periodically in a medical setting
    • These fasts can last for between 5 and 40 days
  • One Meal A Day (OMAD)
    • A form of intermittent fasting that involves eating one meal at the same time each day and then fasting for the other 23 hours

Fasting Safety:

  • Experts acknowledge that in some patients, fasting is not the best course of action
    • This includes people with inadequate kidney function
  • It is also important to be careful when attempting a dry fast
  • Make sure to watch out for any negative side effects from fasting, as they might be signs that you should shorten the length of your fast
    • Negative effects can be related to: sleep, muscle performance, productivity, and recovery

Fasting Considerations:

  • More is not always better
    • Different fast lengths have different benefits, so it’s important to consider what you want to get out of fasting when choosing a methodology
    • Extending the length of your fast does not always mean increasing its benefits
  • Everyone’s body reacts differently to fasting, what works for one person may not work for another
    • This is important to note when trying to decide on fasting length
    • Also crucial when trying to enter autophagy, as everyone’s body enters autophagy after a different time of fasting
  • You may need to experiment with a few different fasting methods when you first start
    • And remember, if you need support figuring out what works best for you, we’re here to help!

The Joy of Fasting – Rumi Poem

There’s hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness.
We are lutes, no more, no less.
If the soundbox
is stuffed full of anything, no music.
If the brain and belly are burning clean
with fasting, every moment a new song comes out of the fire.
The fog clears, and new energy makes you
run up the steps in front of you.
